How to Avoid Blurry Webtoon Compression Artifacts
Keep lettering, line art, and gradients clean from your drawing app to the published episode. The key is to control the resize and inspect each slice before upload.
Why WEBTOON can blur your line art
A 1600px-wide or 3000px-wide master strip is excellent for drawing, but it is not an ideal final upload. WEBTOON says its uploader may automatically optimize and slice long images to fit the 800 × 1280px maximum per image. Its published upload FAQ says oversized images may also have their dimensions, file size, format, or quality changed. Those are possibilities, not a promise that every upload receives the same recompression.
When your art is reduced, fine strokes and small type are averaged into fewer pixels. If a JPEG is then compressed again, subtle edges may develop soft halos or blocky noise. A high-resolution original cannot guarantee a sharp published result if the final 800px version was never checked.
Compare your local 800px export at 100% zoom with the uploaded episode on a phone. If the local copy is already soft, fix resizing or lettering first. If only the published copy looks worse, inspect file size and the uploader’s optimization message.
The golden rule: pre-downscale before you upload
Keep the full-resolution master, then export a separate copy at 800px wide with its aspect ratio locked. A deliberate local downscale lets you inspect your own resampling result before another system touches the file. In Photoshop, Bicubic Sharper is designed for reduction; Procreate’s Resample uses bicubic interpolation. A browser Canvas also smooths during resizing, though its exact algorithm is browser-dependent.
- Duplicate your original file; never repeatedly resize and re-save the only master.
- Set the output width to 800px with proportions locked. Do not stretch the height independently.
- Zoom the export to 100% and read the smallest bubble text. Adjust lettering in the master if necessary.
- Slice vertically at no more than 1280px per image; keep a shorter last slice.
- Check the actual bytes of every exported file before publishing.
Drop your full-res strip into the free CreaPocket Webtoon Slicer. It runs 100% client-side, with no artwork upload to CreaPocket.
It proportionally downsizes wide source images, cuts them into numbered slices, and exports JPEG at 92% quality. It does not enforce a 2 MB ceiling or guarantee conversion to sRGB; check both before upload.
Best export settings for Clip Studio Paint, Procreate & Photoshop
These are practical starting points, not platform-required presets. Export a small sample and compare lettering, flat colors, and shaded panels at phone size.
| App | Canvas / export width | Resize method | Color profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clip Studio Paint | Keep a large master; set export width to 800px. | File → Export webtoon; set width, divide vertically at 1280px. For single-layer export, prefer quality when reducing. | Work in RGB/sRGB where practical; verify the exported profile. |
| Procreate | Keep the original canvas; resize a duplicate to 800px wide. | Actions → Canvas → Crop & Resize → Resample, with aspect lock on; Procreate uses bicubic interpolation. | Choose an sRGB canvas for web work and check exported colors. |
| Photoshop | Image Size or Export As: 800px wide, proportions linked. | Resample with Bicubic Sharper for reduction; inspect fine art for oversharpening. | Convert to sRGB and embed the profile on export. |
Clip Studio Paint documents width selection and vertical division; its general export dialog offers quality settings for reduction. Adobe documents sRGB conversion and embedding. Menu names can differ by app version.
PNG vs. high-quality JPEG: the 2 MB trap
PNG is lossless, so it can keep flat-color edges and lettering cleaner. An 8-bit indexed PNG may be compact for limited palettes, but can introduce banding in gradients; compare it with full-color PNG if your scene has smooth shading. JPEG is lossy but often much smaller for painted backgrounds and textured panels. A 90–95% JPEG range is a useful starting experiment; 92% is often a reasonable balance, not an official WEBTOON setting.
The 2 MB per-image limit still applies even if a slice is exactly 800 × 1280px. WEBTOON’s published FAQ says oversized submissions may be optimized in several ways, including reduced quality, while its uploader may reject files that do not meet current requirements. Do not rely on automatic compression to rescue an oversized PNG. Export, inspect the file size, and adjust the format or quality yourself.
If a 92% JPEG is over 2 MB, try a slightly lower quality and compare text at 100%. If flat colors develop ringing, test PNG. Change one variable at a time; do not repeatedly recompress the same JPEG.
Four common troubleshooting questions
Does 300 DPI look sharper than 72 DPI on WEBTOON?
No, not when the exported pixel dimensions are identical. DPI/PPI mainly describes print density. For a screen image, an 800px-wide file has the same pixel width at either metadata value; changing DPI without resampling does not create detail.
Why do gradients band on my phone?
Smooth gradients can reveal limited color depth, palette reduction, or JPEG compression. Try a full-color PNG if it fits the limit, use an sRGB export, and compare on a phone. Subtle texture can sometimes make steps less visible, but add it to the master rather than repeatedly recompressing.
Why is my text fuzzy even before upload?
Small lettering may collapse during the 800px downscale. Preview at the final size, enlarge or simplify the text in the original artwork, and export once from the master. Changing DPI metadata alone will not help.
Can I upload one long 3000px-wide image and let WEBTOON fix it?
The uploader may resize or slice oversized art, but that leaves less control over cuts and final quality. Pre-downscale proportionally, slice to the published limits, inspect each result, and use the current publishing screen as the final authority.
